Phase 3 · Lesson 8

Assent, Reject, or Withhold

Three honest answers exist. Most of us use only one.

Skill in training: Practise all three responses, especially the disciplined third: epochē, suspension.

The Situation

Lessons 3, 5, 8 evidence cases

A colleague forwards a claim about a mutual acquaintance. It is plausible, unproven, and unflattering.

Core Insight

To withhold where evidence is incomplete is not weakness. It is precision.

Epictetus

What do you actually know, first-hand, this hour?

Examination Exercise

Choose the disciplined response for each claim.

The email says the meeting moved to three.

He probably said it to undermine you.

Everyone secretly agrees with the criticism.

Practice Beyond the Academy

Find one claim today you cannot verify. Say plainly, to yourself or another: I do not know yet. Record how it felt to leave it open.

Reflection · saved to your work

  • Which of the three answers is hardest for your temperament?
  • What did suspension protect you from?
