Stoic Training Cards

Wisdom you can carry in your pocket.

Short Stoic exercises, drawn from the classics and adapted for the way we live now. Practical, repeatable, made to be carried into the day.

StoicOs Cards — Concepts

Core Stoic concepts and practices, one visual guide at a time. The image draws you in; the text below each card explains, and links take you to the place where you can practise it.

StoicOs visual guide to the Stoic dichotomy of control: what is within and beyond our control.

StoicOs Card 001

Dichotomy of Control

The foundational Stoic distinction: your judgments, intentions, choices and actions are yours; other people, outcomes, reputation and chance are not. Wisdom begins by learning to tell the two apart.

StoicOs visual guide to the four Stoic virtues — wisdom, courage, justice, temperance — around a golden compass.

StoicOs Card 002

The Four Virtues

Wisdom, courage, justice and temperance: one compass for every choice. Not ideals to admire, but standards to practise in the decisions you make every day (a StoicOs reflection).

StoicOs visual guide to aretē: human excellence lived in accordance with virtue and reason — the direction, with nobilising as the practice.

StoicOs Card 003

Aretē — Human Excellence

Aretē (ἀρετή) is human excellence — the Stoic direction toward becoming a wiser, more courageous, just and temperate human being. It is the ideal we choose to pursue, not the status we already have. Every choice is an opportunity to align with virtue and reason; nobilising is the daily practice that refines what is already good.

StoicOs visual guide showing the Stoic path: nine steps from impression and reason to character and inner freedom.

StoicOs Card 004

The Stoic Path

From Impression → Impulse → Reason → Virtue → Assent → Choice → Action → Character → Inner Freedom: the StoicOs practice model of how a single moment of judgment becomes, over a lifetime, a character.

StoicOs visual guide to Stoic practice: Stoicism is not merely something you know — it is practised throughout life.

StoicOs Card 005

Stoic Practice

Stoicism is not merely something you know. It is a set of human skills — recognising impressions, examining impulses, governing assent — maintained, refined and nobilised throughout life.

StoicOs visual guide to premeditatio malorum: calmly considering in advance what may go wrong, to meet it with a prepared mind.

StoicOs Card 006

Premeditatio Malorum

Consider in advance what may go wrong — not to become anxious, but to meet difficulty with clarity and readiness. Preparation does not control the future; it prepares your character for it.

StoicOs visual guide to memento mori — remember you must die — with an hourglass, a skull and a Stoic figure at sunset.

StoicOs Card 007

Memento Mori

“Remember you must die” — not a call to fear death, but a reminder to live deliberately while you are here. Mortality is not the end of life; it is the beginning of wisdom.

StoicOs visual guide to amor fati — love your fate — a Stoic figure walking a golden path out of a storm toward the light.

StoicOs Card 008

Amor Fati

Do not merely endure what happens: learn to work with it. Not resignation, but participation in life — accept the circumstance, examine your judgment, choose what virtue asks of you now.

StoicOs visual guide to the inner citadel: a golden fortress in a storm — the inner ground of judgment and character.

StoicOs Card 009

The Inner Citadel

Build what cannot be taken from you. Your inner citadel is the inner ground from which you examine impressions, govern assent and choose how to respond. You remain — that is your strength.

StoicOs visual card for inner freedom — reason, virtue, character — a Stoic figure between temple columns at dawn.

StoicOs Card 010

Inner Freedom

The direction of the whole practice. We cannot command everything that happens around us — but we can cultivate reason, virtue and character in how we respond. Inner Freedom is the destination.

StoicOs visual card for Nobilise: a sculptor refining an almost-finished marble statue — maintain and refine what is already good.

StoicOs Card 011

Nobilise — Refine What Is Good

A StoicOs educational term (not an ancient one): the lifelong maintenance, cultivation and refinement of what is already good in judgment, attitude and character — in the direction of aretē. A lesson can be completed; the practice continues.
