Your Role Within the Whole

The role is given; the execution is yours.

  • Distinguish roles from identity.
  • Determine role duties.
  • Weigh conflicting roles virtuously.

Historical Core

Stoic texts regularly speak of the roles a person receives: human being, parent, citizen, governor, friend. Living well means fulfilling these roles reasonably and virtuously.

Classical Stoic doctrine, presented as historical philosophy

Modern Translation

The learner examines not only 'what do I want?', but 'what does this role now rightly ask of me?'

The Situation

Een mens vervult zijn rollen binnen het grotere geheel: mens, burger, vriend — deel van de kosmische orde.

A governor must take unpopular measures that are necessary for continuity, but can distribute the burdens differently.

The Exercise

Make a role map: human being, function, relationship, citizen. Note per role one duty and one limit.

Epictetus · mentor voice, paraphrase

Play the role before you well, but do not confuse the role with your whole being.

Journal Question · saved to your Record

Which duty truly belongs to my role, and which demand have I added to it out of ego?

Mastery Evidence

A role decision that explicitly applies wisdom, justice, courage, and temperance.

Demonstrate this in the Path of Nature with a real example.

Test your judgment by the four virtues.
