The Practice of Acceptance

These practices carry acceptance out of the Academy and into ordinary days. None of them is a streak to farm. Each is one small, complete act of seeing reality before preference, and each note you keep here is evidence of training, kept for your own eyes.

Daily

Pause Before Protest

For one minute, note only facts before sending any reaction.

Reality first, verdict later: the smallest complete act of this course.

Conditional Planning

Formulate plans with 'if circumstances permit'.

The reserve clause of the Stoics: intention full, attachment to outcome loosened.

Weekly

View From Above

Describe one conflict from five scale levels.

Distance shrinks noise; duty keeps its size.

Voluntary Discomfort

Use one small chosen limitation to observe dependency and preference.

Training with what is given, on your own terms first.

Never as punishment, and never as a medical risk. Keep it small, chosen, and safe.

Loss Rehearsal

Think briefly and carefully about temporary absence or loss, to deepen attention.

Impermanence used as presence, never as fear.

The aim is deepened attention, not anxiety. Stop if it feeds fear rather than presence.

Impermanence Walk

On a walk, observe five visible changes without calling them good or bad.

Change watched neutrally becomes bearable, then instructive.

In the Field

Cause Map

Draw at least five factors before assigning any blame.

One culprit is a simpler story; it is rarely the true one.

Role Reminder

Before a difficult conversation, name the relevant human and functional role.

The role read clearly makes the duty readable too.

Agency Reset

After a setback, fill three columns: choose, influence, accept.

The refined dichotomy applied as first aid.

Cosmopolis Audit

In a decision, explicitly include one absent or distant stakeholder.

The circle of care tested where no one is watching.
