Stoic Training · Part 12

Fear & Anger

I am not my fear. I am not my anger. I choose my response.

Fear and anger are two faces of the same untrained response. This training follows seven steps from recognizing the signal to choosing reason over impulse — the Stoic way.

The training

  1. 1. Recognize fear

Fear is a signal, not the truth. See it. Name it. Do not let it lead you.

  2. 2. Understand the cause

Ask yourself: what truly threatens me? What is real, what is imagined?

  3. 3. Anger comes from fear

Anger is often wounded fear. Insecurity. Loss of control. See what lies beneath.

  4. 4. Separate thought from fact

It's not what happens that disturbs you, but your judgment about it — as Epictetus taught.

  5. 5. Master your response

Between stimulus and response, there is space. That is where your power lies. Choose reason over impulse.

  6. 6. Prevent hatred

Uncontrolled anger becomes hatred. Hatred destroys you first, then the world around you.

  7. 7. The Stoic way

Marcus Aurelius taught: the best revenge is not becoming like the one who wronged you.

Mantra

Fear comes and goes. Anger flares up. But character remains. It is not weakness to feel. It is strength to master it.

A note on the quotations

Step 4 paraphrases Epictetus, Enchiridion 5. “Between stimulus and response, there is space” (step 5) is a modern line popularly attributed to Viktor Frankl — not an ancient Stoic quotation. Step 7 paraphrases Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 6.6.
